Gum disease is one of the most dangerous dental issues in the world today. It is caused by a buildup of plaque on the teeth and gumline. As time passes, the plaque attacks the gums, turns to tartar, infects the smile and even deteriorates the underlying bone. There are two stages to this disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Our periodontist, Dr. Seth Rush, is happy to tell you all about those stages today.
-Gingivitis: Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease and it develops, like mentioned before, when you leave plaque on the smile. The plaque irritates the gums and makes them swell, turn a red color and bleed often. Another symptom of gingivitis is persistent bad breath. One treatment for gingivitis is a professional dental cleaning.
-Periodontitis: Periodontitis is the second stage of gum disease and it develops when the plaque turns into tartar and infects the gums and bones. As it bothers the gums, the gums move away from the teeth and create pockets of infection. Then, the tartar moves underneath the gums and starts deteriorating the jawbone, which causes loose and lost teeth. Treatments available for this stage include scaling and root planing, laser therapy, gum and bone grafts and more.
